Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main components of a college application?

Most college applications require the following:

  • Application form (Common App, Coalition App, or university-specific)

  • High school transcript and GPA

  • Standardized test scores (SAT or IELTS though some schools are test-optional)

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Personal statement/college essay

  • Extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and work experience

  • Application fee

What is a "fit" school, and how do I find one?

A "fit" school refers to a college that aligns with a student's academic, personal, and extracurricular interests. It also considers the student's financial situation and desired campus environment (e.g., large vs. small, urban vs. rural). Researching schools based on these factors will help identify which institutions are the best fit.

Do I need to submit SAT or IELTS scores?

Many colleges have adopted test-optional policies, meaning students can choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores. It is essential to check each university's admissions requirements to understand if scores are required or optional.

What is the deadline for applying?

College application deadlines vary depending on the type of application:

  • Early Decision (ED): Usually in November (binding)

  • Early Action (EA): Usually in November (non-binding)

  • Regular Decision (RD): Typically in January or February

  • Rolling Admissions: Offers are made as applications are received, often with deadlines into the spring

What is the difference between Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA)?

  • Early Decision (ED) is binding, meaning if you are admitted, you must attend the school. You can apply to only one school through ED.

  • Early Action (EA) is non-binding, and you can apply to multiple schools through EA.

How important are college essays?

College essays are an essential part of the application. They give students an opportunity to present themselves beyond grades and test scores, showcasing their personality, motivations, and unique experiences. A well-written essay can significantly impact the admissions decision.

Do I need letters of recommendation?

Most colleges require letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors. Some schools ask for one or two letters, while others may ask for more. It’s important to choose recommenders who know you well and can provide specific examples of your strengths.

What extracurricular activities should I include?

Quality matters more than quantity. Focus on activities where you’ve demonstrated leadership, passion, and commitment over time. This could include clubs, sports, volunteer work, internships, and hobbies. Universities look for students who contribute to their communities and show initiative.

What is a "holistic" admissions process?

Holistic admissions consider a wide range of factors, including academic performance, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, essays, recommendations, and personal background. Universities using this process look for well-rounded individuals who will contribute positively to campus life.

How do I stand out in the admissions process?

To stand out, focus on presenting a compelling and authentic application. Highlight unique experiences, show how you’ve made an impact in your community, and demonstrate your passion for learning and personal growth. Strong essays and recommendation letters are crucial in helping you shine. This is why we are here!
